It has been a great week here at Jacks Creek Elementary! We have been learning so much!
Kindergarten had a great week! Students are continuing to work on reading and writing sentences, reading words with blends, counting to 100 by ones and 10s and decomposing teen numbers into 10 and some ones. We look forward to speaking with everyone for our parent/teacher conferences from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17. Please check with your child’s teacher if you have a question about your scheduled time. No school for students Friday, Feb. 18, and no school on Monday, Feb. 21, in observance of President’s Day.
We have had a great week in first grade. We finished learning about the history of the earth by reading about fossils and dinosaurs. In skills we continued reading about “The Green Fern Zoo” and learned about two syllable words, more tricky words and the r controlled sound /or/ as in for. In math we learned how to add three addends and solve word problems with three addends.
We are so excited to be learning about the War of 1812 in second grade. We would love to share what we have learned, so just ask! We are finishing up addition and subtraction word problems with measurement. We will soon begin learning about money and time.
In third grade we are learning about Colonial America. We are learning about Roanoke and Jamestown, cash crops and trading. We will be creating personal narrative writings. In math we are learning more about fractions, in particular, equivalent fractions. This skill is one of our more challenging skills in third grade. We will learn by using number lines and manipulatives. In social studies students are conducting research on people that have made an impact and we celebrate for Black History Month. Students will be using this information gathered to independently create informational writing pieces.
Our Beekeeper of the Week goes to Jesse Davenport, who says his favorite book is “Goosebumps” and his favorite food is cheese sticks. We are proud to have this student shine brightly at our school! Our Staff Beekeeper of the Week goes to Heather McPeake. Her favorite book is “The Notebook,” and her favorite food is cheeseburger and fries! We appreciate all that she does as one of our wonderful custodians!
Labeling Items of Clothing: as temperatures continue to fall, remember to label your child’s winter clothing items (jackets, coats, hats, etc.). We already have a few jackets hanging on our lost and found rack.
Box tops are a super easy way to earn money for our school. Clip box tops or download the box tops for education app. Scan your receipts to earn free money for our school! It is that easy!
