It was an amazing week here at Jacks Creek Elementary School as we start our first week back from Christmas break!
Kindergarten had a great week back! We worked on reading words with blends, sentence writing, sight words, counting to 100 and decomposing numbers into tens and ones.
First grade had a fun few days of learning since coming back from the holiday break. We read and learned about the Earth, the sun and other stars in outer space. Most of us decided that it is our favorite unit in reading thus far. In our reading skills, we learned the sound /ou/ as in loud, reviewed action verbs, learned the tricky word down, read more fables and answered lots of comprehension questions about each story. In the fable "The Dog and the Mule," we learned to always be yourself and do not try to be like someone else. In writing we wrote our New Year's resolutions. In math we began learning various strategies to subtract within 20 such as using a number line, counting on, counting back, and using addition to subtract. Overall, we had a great week in first grade.
Second grade was so excited to be back at school after a wonderful holiday break! We reviewed all second grade math standards previously taught as well as phonics skills, nouns and verbs in ELA. This week, we are working hard as we take our Exact Path ELA and Math computer assessments to show our growth thus far. During the next few weeks, we will be learning about the War of 1812 in CKLA. In math our new standard involves solving contextual problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using ยข and $ symbols appropriately. Playing with coins at home is a fun way for us to practice counting money! Give us a handful of coins and listen to us count the money. If we learn to count money really well, maybe we could KEEP a handful of coins!?!
The third-grade teachers were glad to have their students back from Winter Break! In ELA we began a new unit on Native Americans. This unit talks about Native Americans all over North America, the different tribes and their customs. In math we wrapped up our unit on area and perimeter. In science we talked about weather tools scientists use to measure the weather.
Our first student spotlight of the week goes to Reece Miller, whose favorite food is hotdogs and favorite books are books about robots. Our second student spotlight of the week goes to Timothy Collett, whose favorite food is tacos and favorite book is "Cat in the Hat." We are proud to have these students shine brightly at our school!
Our Dominos' PSO Fundraiser is set to begin Jan. 17 and end Feb. 3. More details will be sent home. The grade level with the most sales gets to Pie the Principal in the face.
