Chester County Register of Deeds Doris Ethridge released a notice to new property owners this week. In the notice, she explained that a deed scam is going around again in Tennessee. The scammers that are doing this are sending new—or a change in—property owners a letter which tells them they can provide you (the new owner) a copy of your deed and a profile of your property for a price. This price is around $89.00 to $123.00.
This letter will look very important and official, Ethridge said, but stressed that it is not.
A copy of a deed can be obtained from the office of the Register of Deeds, at no charge or cost.
The other information they are trying to sell can be obtained from the Property Assessor’s—Beverly Morton—office.
Ethridge has instructed the community members to either throw the fake letter away or bring it to her office for her to answer any questions. The office number is 731-989-4991 and it is open Monday through Friday.
