Playing for the first time in a week, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions picked up their eighth straight win with a 58-37 victory over the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) University.
It took nearly the entire first quarter for the Lady Lions (8-1) to shake the rust off, going 2-11 in the first five minutes while Blue Mountain Christian opened up to a six-point advantage. It was not until Raegan Purvine’s 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in the first frame that the Lady Lions took their first lead at 14-12.
The second half was all Lady Lions with FHU bucketing a triple from Alaina Stiles before KJ White’s set of 3-pointers sandwiched a Rachel Satterly jumper. The Toppers (1-6) were held to four points in the second quarter, giving the Lady Lions a 28-16 lead at intermission.
FHU began to separate from the opposition in the third quarter with Kelsey Bender joining the 3-pointer club with a pair of long balls, joining Satterly’s two and White’s one in a 22-point explosion. The Lady Lions would score six unanswered points to close the quarter with a 50-26 edge.
With the Lady Lions on top by a game-high 26 points, the back end of the bench got plenty of minutes of the fourth quarter before finalizing the 58-37 win.
37 points are the fewest allowed by the Lady Lions this season, while FHU’s bench tallied 23 points.
Rachel Satterly and KJ White led FHU’s offense with identical lines, going 5-13 to score 13 points. Satterly was 2-3 from the free-throw line while White was 3-6 from deep. Kelsey Bender was perfect from the floor including going 3-3 from long range to bucket 11 points. Bender also grabbed a team-high five rebounds and two steals.
