School board petitions County

Posted

The Chester County Commission met Monday, May 11, at the Chester County Courthouse. All members of the commission were present except for Mike Alexander and Ann Moore.
The first item on the agenda was the approval of budget amendments. Sectors that had budget amendments passed were the Board of Education, the Highway Department, and the County General.
On the same note, quarterly reports were approved for the following sectors: Board of Education, Highway Department, Trustee, County General, Solid Waste, Library, Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Management.
Superintendent Troy Kilzer came on behalf of the Chester County Board of Education to advocate for the approval of the 2027 fiscal year maintenance of effort. These are funds that are given to the school system by the county for them to use only on capital projects, such as upkeep of the schools. Superintendent Kilzer advocated that in order to keep up the school system here in Chester County, this fund should remain the same, with the hope that it will increase in the years to come as prices for upkeep are rising. The Commission had much debate on this, as the county is trying to cut back on expenses as much as they can. Commissioner Tim Crowe was concerned that if the commission accepted the continued use of this expense, then there would be requests for a larger amount in the coming years. Superintendent Kilzer responded that while the school system could really use more funds in the future, they would be able to work with this proposed budget. The motion passed 10-6 for the approval of the maintenance of effort for the 2027 fiscal year.
There are several upcoming events for the county. The Jackson Symphony will be playing on the Courthouse lawn on June 4. Chester County’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary will be on June 27.
