The Chester County Historical Society met on Oct. 7 at the Senior Center. Speaker Preston Shackleford gave the inglorious life story of Harold Pitts Roe, born in Chester County in 1930. In Roe’s short life he was incarcerated, mainly for theft, in small jails and larger prisons such as Brushy Mountain; Parchman, Miss.; Leavenworth, Kan.; and Alcatraz, Calif. His career included a long list of escapes, as well. Roe died in 1974 and is buried in Roby Cemetery.
