Silerton Baptist church requested prayers for the family of Brother Troy Styers, Pastor of First Baptist Grand Junction, who passed away while serving his flock on Aug. 31, 2025. Gratitude was expressed that Brother Charlie Carruther’s son Eddie continues to improve.
Several Labor Day events led to much reminiscing of people gone to the Lord and of events past. All these events had three things in common: a remembering of loved ones no longer with us, a celebration of the blessings we have now and a hope that future generations continue the traditions.
On Aug. 30, 2025, Lambert family members started their three-day family reunion. The family of Clay and Lyda Lambert started having a family reunion Labor Day Weekend back in 1990. Some families from the area met the families who had traveled from Illinois at Casey Jones Restaurant in Jackson for their buffet meal. On Saturday night, families began arriving at the home of Frankie Lambert for a hamburger and hotdog cookout plus a potluck meal. After the meal, Brian Howell entertained with several Elvis songs. For Sunday’s lunch, the families gathered for another potluck meal to finish up. After the meal, family members enjoyed a traditional family softball game with adults and children playing together. Fifty-eight family members came to the potluck meal from eight different states. This caused the population of Silerton to surge by 50% during the holiday weekend. Clay and Lyda Lambert were the proud parents of nine children. All but two children have passed. Frankie and Leo are the two sons that now make up the Clay and Lyda family. At 79 years, Frankie was the oldest attendee. A great-great-granddaughter from Kentucky, Sadie Mills at two years old was the youngest. Twelve grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren were in attendance. Hoping these great and great-great-grandchildren will keep this family event going.
Also, on Aug. 30, the Frys had their family reunion at the home of Vickie and Terry Gardner in Humbolt. All are deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication Vickie and Terry have put into the reunion for the past several years. Vickie’s mother was Lucy Katherine Austin (née Fry), who was a sister to Robert Fry. The reunion has been going on since the 1980s. There were total of 35 attendees from Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina. Robert Fry at 84 was the oldest, followed by Autumn Appling at two years old as the youngest. Fresh catfish (caught and cooked by the exceptionally skilled Terry Gardner), fried chicken and sides were served. All agreed the catfish was the best they have ever had.
On Labor Day, the long-standing Mayfield Dove Hunt was held in honor of Bill and Jonny Mayfield. Donnie Mayfield, son of Bill Mayfield, and many others worked hard to continue this tradition.
On Sept. 6, Marcus and Jamie Fry attended the opening of 65th Jackson Symphony season. The program included works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Pärt, Ravel, Lizst and Stravinsky.
