The Silerton Volunteer Fire Department had its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. this past Tuesday, April 14. The meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month and are open to the public. It was reported that a fire engine was repaired, and a new water pump for the department’s well will be installed. If you have not already, please submit your yearly dues. The fire department counts heavily on those dues. It has been a dry month, so please avoid any outside burning. If you must burn, please get a burn permit. They can be obtained online at https://www.tn.gov/tnwildlandfire/prevention/safe-debris-burning/permits.html, or you can call 877-350-BURN (2876). From October 15 through May 15, a burn permit from the Tennessee Division of Forestry (TDF) is required for debris pile fires and prescribed fires. Getting a permit gives your local fire department a “heads up” in case their services are needed.
Silerton Baptist Church celebrated this past Sunday with a communion service. Happy birthday was sung to Robert Fry (April 18).
Marcus and Jamie Fry were treated to poke salad this past Thursday. It is made from the leaves of pokeweed, a common flowering plant native to North America. This treat was kindly made possible by Anita and Larry Lambert of Henderson who invited the Frys over for another wonderful dinner. The Frys had been told by many here about poke salad but had never had any. It must be cooked right to avoid any toxicity. They found it had a pleasant, mild flavor to it, no doubt made possible by Anita’s expert knowledge, which negated an emergency room visit.
On the goat front: Jail break. With turkey season still in full swing, the goats are still penned up for their own safety but for one buck who momentarily eluded capture. With grim determination, Joe Stack managed to finally apprehend this “outlaw” buck. Yet, in passing the disheartened fellow through the pen’s gate, 12 malcontents seized on the opportunity and escaped. These escapees were eventually captured and reincarcerated with reduced privileges. On a brighter note, two late kids were birthed.
