The calendar had Piney Grove Baptist Church celebrate Decoration Day and Memorial Day on the same weekend. It was a full house at Piney Grove with a moving service honoring those who have served our nation and paid the ultimate price. The membership took turns naming family members who gave their lives while serving. When asked to raise a hand if you had any family members who had served or are serving, it was striking and humbling to see the near universal raising of hands from the congregation. Afterwards, there was a fellowship dinner with all the usual catching up and meeting of new people and, of course, all the delicious food. Many thanks to the labor and love of all those who put it all together.
The Silerton City Council had a lengthy meeting at 6 p.m. May 26. The Council was pleased to have Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse and Rusty Thigpen, EMS Director for Hardeman County, as presenters. Todd and Rusty presented Silerton with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a portable medical device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. It will tentatively be placed in Silerton Baptist Church. CPR/AED training sessions will be determined at a later date. Todd gave an update as to how the early warning siren installation is moving along. Upon the recommendation of the installers, it will tentatively be installed somewhere by the City Hall building. The AED and siren (including installation) are to be provided at no cost to Silerton. The Council also announced that all replacement speed bumps have been installed.
Silerton Baptist Church wished a happy birthday to their beloved Pastor Charlie Crouthers. Pastor Charlie was gifted a present to complement his love of camping. Please continue your prayers for Joe Seavers. A reminder from Debby Ross that the children’s “Wednesday in the Park” will start at 6:30 p.m. June 3 and go through July 29.
A big shout out to Richard and Rita Crowley for their work in decorating the antique wagon at Silerton Park. It is decked out with flags and red, white and blue garlands for Memorial Day and the upcoming Fourth of July. It sparkles beautifully in the sunlight. Helios himself, the ancient Greek Titan god of the sun, would be proud to be at its helm. Silerton, being a small village with a small chariot, would only require four of our flaming, winged goats to pull it rather than the usual four flaming, winged horses, which cost more to feed anyway and have outrageous vet bills.
The Silerton community welcomes Caleb Richardson to our area. Caleb is the son of Chris and Stephanie Richardson. He is the grandson of Wayne and Gwen Cox. We are thankful to have him in our community.
