We hope that everyone had a great July Fourth holiday, especially on this very special 250th occasion. It is nice that one has the choice of small patriotic towns in the area to pick from a variety of firework shows. It would not be totally outside the realm of possibility that some of our readers will hopefully be around for the nation’s 300th birthday, the Tricentennial! No doubt by then they will be receiving and reading the column via a chip embedded in their brain. If one gets the pro/max version of the chip, they could even have their own private fireworks show in their head and avoid the traffic.
The Silerton Baptist Church members sang happy birthday to Keith Cossar, Debbie Dillard and Guillermina Tidwell. The Tidwells’ young son Desmond took a turn in helping to lead the service. It was good to see Joe Seavers back in church after a hiatus due to medical reasons. Prayers for Wanda Fry as she recovers from a medical procedure. It was announced that at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11, Montezuma Community Church will be having a baked potato and salad fund raiser to send children to The Ark Encounter park in Kentucky.
There will be several other birthdays coming up in July: David Black on the 16th, Bobby Naylor on the 19th, Stan Rush on the 26th and Janet Lambert on the 30th.
On the Fourth, Jamie and Marcus Fry took advantage of Bolivar’s Little Courthouse Museum’s opening its doors for a few hours. A very interesting lecture was given by local historian Cissye Pierce. Local historian Ken Savage and his wife Debra were also there, and Ken gave the Frys a personal tour. Many thanks to them and to volunteers Judge Harriet Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Levins for their work on preserving and sharing Hardeman County’s rich history. A thank you also goes out to Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse who is working to bring more attention to the museum which has been closed for several years.
