Silerton Baptist Church will be having their fifth Sunday fellowship meal on Aug. 30. Please bring yourself and your favorite dish to share. There are only so many months with a fifth Sunday, so do not let this one pass.
Happy 75th birthday to Anita Lambert, wife of Silerton’s Larry Lambert. Anita celebrated by going on a 75-mile ride on her e-bike. Happy birthday also to William Barry Siler, always a Silertonian.
Leo Lambert let us know that Tracy Cloud passed away on Aug. 12. He was a resident of Henderson and had family in Silerton.
The Frys explored the far edge of Chester and McNairy counties to see which side of the bread they butter and to attend the Wild Goose Shindig in Enville. As a fundraiser for their fire department, food plates were for sale, a silent auction and a large and very seriously taken cake walk, marshalled by the Wayne Whitten band, was had. A dizzying number of cakes were handed to the many winners. Larry Lambert won two cakes and very generously gave one to Jamie Fry, who made an attempt earlier but did not win. Maybe with practice she will win one next year.
It was interesting to find out that Wild Goose was the original name of Enville, as Dick Harden raised geese in the area back in the day. With all due respect to the late Representative B. A. Enloe (hence Enville) and his descendants, one wonders if the residents of Enville stay up at night wondering what would have happened if they had kept the delightful name of Wild Goose? Would the town be the same as now? Would it have become a ghost town and a mere footnote in Tennessee history, or perhaps it might have turned into a metropolis to rival Jackson?
Silerton and Silertonians are happy with their name. Goat Town, Goat Junction, Goatville, etc., might have been a bit too much.
