Silerton Community News

Posted

October is Pastor Appreciation Month (also known as Clergy Appreciation Month), a tradition established in 1992 to honor and encourage our spiritual leaders. Silerton Baptist Church was pleased to take part in this by giving their beloved Pastor Charlie Crouthers a card/gift and a resounding Amen with everyone present shaking his hand for his many years of loving service to Silerton and the community at large.
The Church was also treated to a video of its children reciting and singing Bible verses for 218 attendees during the Hardeman County Baptist Association meeting held at the First Baptist Church in Bolivar on Sunday, Oct. 18. The children performed admirably, and Silerton is very proud of them.
Dec. 4 has been chosen as the cut-off date for ordering items from the Silerton Volunteer Fire Department annual Christmas fundraising bake sale to be held on Dec. 18-19. Please contact Donna Waldrip before Dec. 4 at 731-658-7889 to place your orders.
Many thanks to Emma Hopper who offers us the following “CCHS Reunion Reflections:”
The Chester Class of 1964 held their 62nd Class Reunion at the First Baptist Church in Henderson, Oct. 24. Sixty-two years ago, 102 students donned their caps and gowns, celebrated and went our separate ways! A mixture of both happy and sad vibes flowed as we happily celebrated and sadly remembered those who have left us too soon. The spirit of 47 friendships and beautiful memories of them walked among us. We honored them with a Memorial Table representing each one, a prayer, a moment of silence and spoken recognition. There were members of the class that wrote the official Alma Mater and chose the school’s official flower (Red Rose). These remain for 62 years revered and unchanged. Last Saturday, 31 classmates, spouses and friends celebrated with fun and food! Three classmates present have Silerton roots having attended Silerton School and all 12 years of school together: Larry Murley, Frankie Lambert and Emma Hopper.
On the cow (there might be some goat news next week) front: On the concept of reincarnation. Marcus Fry tagged along with Joe Stack to help him take some cows to the Savannah stockyard to be sold off. Mr. Stack was kind enough to give Marcus a tour of the facilities, the cat-walks and the auction house. Upon seeing all the cows and goats there, Marcus came to the realization that, if there was reincarnation, he would prefer to come back as a goat rather than a cow. Goats seem to have a more interesting, slightly more charming existence when compared to the more sullen, vacant existence of a cow. Apologies to all those who are more enamored of cows. When pressed, Mr. Stack also agreed that he would prefer to come back as a goat instead of a cow. We both also easily agreed that the best reincarnation scenario would be to come back as a pampered cat (with no other cats, etc.) belonging to a young socialite living in a New York City penthouse. Mr. Stack’s pastor, family and friends can rest assured that he is not at the moment seriously considering going over to any of the various ‘isms that believe in reincarnation.
