The Chester County Board of Education met in regular session Thursday, Feb. 23, with all members in attendance.
The board began the evening with their spotlight/celebration of host school, Chester County High School. Principal Clay Murley introduced the program, stating that a portion of the school’s vision statement was for students to be college and career ready. Senior Madison Woofter, Junior Jacob Mutter and Sophomore Emma Williams told about their own experiences with Work Based Learning at Quality Metals, the CLEP program and AP studies, respectively. Murley also highlighted dual credit and dual enrollment opportunities for Chester County students.
State Senator Page Walley was on hand to speak about current legislation relating to education in Tennessee. This included third grade retention, virtual learning opportunities for students, such as those in out of school suspension and availability of universal pre-K. The board voted unanimously to approve additional courses at CCJHS. These classes include sixth grade career awareness, seventh grade career exploration and eighth grade career aptitude/planning. By 2025, schools will be required to provide computer science courses at all grade levels. Additionally, a number of STEM courses will be included in the 23-24 school year.
Policy 4.602, which pertains to class ranking and weight of points accrued relating to honors classes, CLEP, etc., was revised by unanimous agreement.
A construction management RFP was granted unanimously to E&T Contracting and authority to capital projects to select an architect for upcoming construction at Chester County High School.
In other news, the board chose not to bid out liability insurance, but to continue with current coverage.
