Trice St. Stew binds community for 33 years

Posted

The aroma of homemade stew filled the air Saturday, Sept. 14, assuring the neighborhood that the annual Trice St. Stew was underway. Darlene Jones said she and her neighbor, Vercie M. Massengill, began hosting the stew 33 years ago as a way to bring the community together. On the second Saturday in September each year, the community comes together, sharing the work, the fun – and the food – brewing five to seven large cast iron pots full of homemade stew.
Jones and her family continue to host the event, along with Massengill’s daughter, Matilda Massengill. The 2024 event proved as memorable as ever, with around 75 in attendance.
The next Trice St. Stew is already in the works and is scheduled for Sept. 13, 2025.
