Sometimes, something happens on earth that does not make sense. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. Sometimes, life brings sorrow; sometimes, life brings it in overabundance. Does this make sense? No, it does not. On the surface many things that happen appear unjust and unfair, yet they happen to all of us. As creatures of habit we need structure and routine. When life happens it can be very disruptive, overwhelming and painful. It can be confusing, frustrating and a bit scary. With all the different experiences that are possible from anxiety – anger, shock, brain fog, appetite disruption, sleep disruption, crying, lethargy, detaching ourselves from others, etc. – it is understandable if a person feels anxiety overload.
If we are struggling with finding a new identity since the loss of a soul mate or a child or the loss of our employment career or with just moving forward, realize we are not alone but know that we must persevere and push forward as the captain of our own ship. With a strong support system, we can do this. There is a excerpt from a poem by Mayme White Miller that says, “Whatever happens to us/Here are the words to say/Had it not been for so-and-so/Things would not have gone that way…You are the captain of your ship.” We do not have control over many things that happen in our life, but we do have control over how we respond. In this way we are the captain of our ship. Determine to be resolute, to move forward and to rebuild your life. Be certain there are others around you who are ready and willing to walk with you in your journey for as long as you need.
