In our walk with grief it is understood the value that consolation is in the life of the mourner. We may be consoled from a number of different sources. The greatest source is Jehovah God and his Holy inspired word. Within this context is the single greatest evidence, that being the resurrection of Jesus. We have offered two facts thus far; namely, Jesus lived and he died. If you think this trivial, it is not. There are critics who claim he never lived and was not a real historical figure. As absurd as that sounds, his life is as real as any life, and that is true comfort. Further, fact number three is his empty tomb. Jesus death was a very public execution heavily regulated by the Roman empire and his enemies, the Jewish leaders. Within the text of Holy Scripture we learn of Joseph of Arimathea of the Sanhedrin asked for the body of Jesus (Luke 23:50-52; John 19:38 ff) and buried him in a new tomb (John 19:39-42; Mat. 27:59-60; Isa. 53:9).
Care was taken in his burial and assuring his body was secure from being stolen (as was an accusation from his enemies). His body was wrapped in linen and 70 pounds of spices. A great stone was rolled into place with an official Roman seal and then guards placed at the entrance of the tomb. Neither Romans or Jewish leaders desired for the body to be taken. There was a very serious consequence of allowing the body to be taken with the guards. Yet, on the morning of day three the stone was rolled away, the seal broken, the guards gone and the burial clothing neatly placed in specific local within the tomb. Five hundred plus eye witnesses saw him alive. What comfort and consolation!
