Hope delayed makes the heart sick, but a longing (desire) fulfilled is like a tree of life (Proverbs 13:12). These are very discouraging and depressing times, as we strive to build a new normal out of the rubble that is our loss. Many have lost loved ones during this new Coronavirus outbreak. The above text is a reminder that hope exists and can become a cause for happiness still. When we allow our hope to become weak, we become sick of heart. We lose our focus of our dreams, goals and our aspirations when we think or feel our hope is gone. It is then we are in danger of despair, entering a very dark place in life that some do not return. Yet, hope has been described as medicine and an anchor of the soul.
There is a story of an individual who lost all that was dear and precious. Through their struggle to build anew, they learned their life yet had purpose. They further learned life does not exist in a bubble or on an isolated island to and by ourselves. We need work as well as social interaction to be industrious. Physicians also have reminded us that our immune systems also do not thrive in a vacuum of isolation. Babies pick up many things with germs on them and touch them and taste and this strengthens their immune system. Isolation does not. To keep hope alive we must keep reaching out beyond, keep learning, keep growing, keep in physical and social interaction with each other and keep believing. Faith is the substance or conviction of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Thus faith is based on evidence. This is what keeps hope alive and anchors our soul to what is real, what is important and what is essential. It is hope that gives us the motivation to continue past all loss and anguish, realizing it, too, will pass.
