Evelyn Beatrice Crouse Hysmith, 93, of Finger the widow of John D. Hysmith, went to be with her Lord Monday morning July 3, 2023, at her home surrounded by her three loving daughters.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Shackelford Funeral Directors Crook Avenue with Tony Hysmith, Eric Miller and Jason Miller officiating and soloist Courtney Smith.
Burial followed at Maggie Jones Cemetery at Finger. The family received friends at Crook Avenue from 5-8 p.m. Friday.
Born Oct. 19, 1929, in Henderson, she was the daughter of the Hobert McKinley and Ethel Moten Crouse.
She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Finger since 1954 and serving wherever she was needed.
She was a caring, sweet-hearted lady who loved her Lord, family, and church. She had a green thumb, having beautiful flowers and gardens which she enjoyed. She worked on the farm along side her husband, even driving the tractor at times. She was a lady of many talents; one was her cooking. Her strawberry pies, chocolate balls, apple pies and decorated birthday cakes for the grandchildren were family favorites.
She was a seamstress in her early years, making all her clothing for herself and her daughters. She loved to quilt and made beautiful quilts for each child, grandchild and even great-grandchildren. She quilted as long as her health allowed.
Her talents also included painting and crafting. She had worked at Salant and Salant, Mosier’s Pharmacy and in the cafeteria at Freed-Hardeman, working in cakes and pies. She made a loving home where there was always something good to eat and you were always welcomed.
She was a supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital and request in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Miller, Joan (Larry) Carter and Connie (Steve) Smith, all of Finger; six grandchildren, Eric (Amanda) Miller, Jason (Gina) Miller, Jennifer (Heath) Ramsey, Lance (Leslie) Carter, Molly (Randy) Stanfield and Casey (Courtney) Smith; 13 great-grandchildren, Cody, Dilan, Cole, Randa, Abbey and Carter, Kensley Bea, Taylor, Susanna and Hunter, John Luke, Callie and Rylie; two great-great-grandchildren, John Thomas and Hayes; two sisters, Barbara Ann Cherry and Linda McIllwain; and a brother, Ray Crouse.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, John D. Hysmith, who she lovingly cared for before his death; a son-in- law, Ray Miller; one grandson, Johnny Ray Miller; five brothers, Tommy, Billy, Earl, Hobert, Jr. and James Lewis; and four sisters, Jessie Lee Howell, Elma Dyer, Emma Lou Crouse, and Betty Robbins.
