
Gary Granville Russom, 64, of Henderson passed away Sept. 1, 2023, at his home after a two-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue Chapel with burial at Old Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue from 1-3 p.m. service time on Thursday.
He was born on Oct. 29, 1958, in Jackson, the son of Arlie Granville Russom and Peggy Ann Talbott Russom. He graduated from Chester County High School.
Throughout his lifetime, he worked as a residential construction carpenter for many years in the Chester County area. He also worked as a semi-truck driver, most recently with SRI Incorporated in Jackson until his illness allowed him to no longer work. He enjoyed spending time in his shop at home rebuilding lawn mowers, lathe woodworking, mowing his yard and fishing with the children. He had a love of old tractors and spent lots of time researching and learning about them.
He was a member of Old Friendship Baptist Church but had recently attended Luray Baptist Church up until his illness.
He is survived by his parents, Arlie Granville (Evelyn) Russom of Henderson and Peggy Talbott Russom of Finger; a sister, Julie (Steve) Owens of Lexington; two brothers, Randy (Lisa) Russom of Jackson and David Russom of Pinson; and one niece, Sarah Owens of Lexington.
He is also survived by a long-time partner of 35 years, Joanne Porter Canaday of Henderson; her three children, Monica (Ray) Garton of Olive Hill, Tiffany (Edward) Jones of Finger and Ashley (Nicole) Canaday of Henderson; and seven individuals he claimed as his bonus grandchildren, Hayden Canaday, Paul Jones, Aubrey Garton, Evan Jones, Will Garton, A.J. Canaday and Katee Kuykendall.
