JAMES MASSENGILL Obituary – Sept. 15, 1927 – Sept. 23, 2022

Mr. James O. Massengill, 95, of Henderson passed away Friday evening, Sept. 23, 2022 at his home in Henderson. His funeral were 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson – Crook Avenue Chapel with Bro. Denny Broadway officiating. Burial followed in Milledgeville Cemetery. The family received friends from noon-2 p.m. Wednesday at Crook Avenue Chapel.
He was born Sept. 15, 1927 in the Sweetlips Community of Chester County, son of the late Odus and Etness Lee Massengill. He grew up there and attended Sweetlips School.
He married Sue Ellis on Jan. 23, 1955, and they have been married 67 years.
He was very skilled as a craftsman building furniture and doing upholstery work for many years. He was also an excellent musician and enjoyed gospel music and playing many musical instruments. He even used his woodworking skills to craft many instruments. He owned and operated Star Music in Henderson for many years.
He was a very spiritual man who enjoyed reading his Bible. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church but had later attended First Assembly Church in Henderson for over 20 years.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Massengill of Henderson; a son, Tracy (Christy) Massengill of Henderson; one daughter, Phyllis Holder of Beech Bluff; grandchildren, Lauren Massengill, Jacob (Patience) Massengill and Seth Massengill; and two sisters, Shirley Ellington of Springfield, Mo., and Ocidell Massengill of Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Chris Holder.
