Mary Kathryn Barnes, 96, died at her home in Henderson, Friday, Feb. 25, 2022. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson’s East Main Chapel with Billy Smith officiating. Burial followed in Henderson City Cemetery. The family received friends at East Main Chapel from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28.
She was born in McNairy County on Jan. 7, 1926, daughter of the late Rufus Cletus and Mamie Sue Kennedy Howell. She grew up and attended schools in McNairy County.
She went to work for Brown Shoe Company in 1949 and retired in 1989. She married Buford G. “Crockett” Barnes in 1953, and they made their home in Chester County. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2003 after 49 years of marriage.
She was also a foster grandparent for the Chester County School system for several years and was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ.
She is survived by a son, Greg Barnes of Henderson; three grandchildren, Heather Barnes, Rachel Barnes of Alamo and Carla Schmitt of Jackson; and one sister, Peggy Locke of Ramer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Crockett; a son, Buford Timothy Barnes; one stepdaughter, Janice Schmitt; two brothers, R.C. Howell and Ronnie Barnes; and a sister Ruth Laverne Cupples.
