Novelee James Massengill, 88, of Henderson passed away Saturday morning, July 9, 2022 at Maplewood Health Care Center in Jackson. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue Chapel with Jennifer Dudney Davidson, Frank Bell and Harold Finley officiating. Burial was at Chester County Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home beginning at noon Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in her memory at www.alz.org.
She was born and reared in Waterloo, Ala., the daughter of the late Jessie (Jake) and Icie Dora White James. She attended schools in Chester County and married Max E. Massengill in 1953. They lived most of their married lives at Enville. She worked at Salant & Salant in Henderson and H.I.S. at Saltillo and worked in the cafeteria in the Chester County School system until her retirement. Mr. Massengill preceded her in death in 2015. She was a member of Cabo Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice Massengill Strickland of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Jody Massengill, Josh Massengill, Justin Massengill, Jordan Massengill and Jennifer Dudney Davidson; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother Harold James of Finger; and two sisters, Jessie Nell Hutcherson of Nashville and Corine Terry of Henderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son Johnny Ray Massengill in 2002; one sister Ella Malone; and three brothers, Porter James, Murrel James, and Joe Pat James.
