Ray Herndon Obituary – March 18, 2021

Raymond Talbot Denton Herndon, 78, of Henderson passed away Thursday afternoon March 18, 2021 at Jackson General Hospital. Due to the COVID pandemic, there was a private family service Sunday afternoon at Shackelford Funeral Directors Crook Avenue Chapel with Bro. Bobby Russ officiating.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Grace Baptist Church Building Fund at Pinson.
He was born in St. Louis, Mo., and grew up in Dearborn, Mich., the son of the late Raymond Lawrence Denton and Alice Christine Conrad Herndon and Harrison Derry Herndon, who adopted him at a young age. He graduated from Fordson High School in Dearborn and attended Henry Ford College. He entered the U. S. Navy and served during the Vietnam Era. He later played hockey for the Detroit Red Wings and also coached hockey. He married Jane Moore in 1983. They had made their home in Henderson for the past 28 years. He was a production scheduler and planner at ITT Grinnell where he retired. After retirement he worked part time for Dr. David Magee, DDS in Henderson and Dr. John Crowder, DDS in Jackson.
He enjoyed yard work and researching genealogy. He was a fan of Detroit Tigers baseball, Detroit Redwings hockey, and The University of Michigan, “Go Blue.”
He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and The Sons of The American Revolution Chapter in Henderson.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Moore Herndon of Henderson; a daughter, Jill Shelby; one son, Jeff Herndon both of Michigan; a step-son, Wade (Leigh) Hood of Booneville, Miss.; one sister, Sallye Fagala of St. Louis; and five grandchildren.
