The Frys joined others at the Hardeman County General Election Candidate Forum featuring candidates running for sheriff, mayor and other local offices that took place on July 13 at the Luez Theater in downtown Bolivar. It was a great turn-out and a full house for the debate. For many, it was good to finally put faces to the names you only see on campaign signs. It was a very interesting debate, and there were a couple of small occasions when it got a little spicy. Darrell Teubner was the moderator and ran the debate well and firmly, keeping things from turning into a five-alarm chili. Another reminder that early voting will be from July 17 to Aug. 1. Election day is Aug. 6.
The Silerton Volunteer Fire Department held its monthly meeting (usually the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.) on July 14. It was announced that termite control was applied to the firehouse. Annual membership fees are dribbling in. If you have not paid your membership fee, please consider doing so. If you have not received an invoice for the membership fee and are not sure if you should get one, please call/text Marcus at 512-769-2875 to sort it out. The department currently consists of five active fire fighters. The intrepid volunteers are David Hill, Matt Hill, Tim James, Colby Little and Rickey Wilson.
Silerton Baptist Church has started their Vacation Bible School program and is still in need of volunteers to help with any aspect of it. Yet another happy birthday was sung to Bobby Naylor. The “pounding” for the wedding of Sarah and Shawn Yelverton was a joyful occasion for all. The couple was very thankful for the generosity and thoughtfulness of all those who gave and attended. Many thanks to those that organized it and provided the food/drinks.
Anita Pickett Lambert traveled last week with Sanford Hill Baptist Church for their week of VBS at Waterbury Baptist Church in Waterbury, Conn. Here are some of her notes and observations: “It was a busy week of music, crafts, Bible stories and science. It was a joy to see children that did not know the song ‘Jesus Loves Me’ sing it loud. Your heart skips a beat when a child that has been to the previous VBS events remembers, raises her hand and repeats last year’s bible verse. Adults return home weary but so blessed, sharing the week’s memories, the 1,111 miles on the bumpy bus ride, and wishing we could have brought a couple of the kids home with us. Always reminding ourselves that we should be the hands and feet of Jesus sharing the good news of hope and love of Jesus.”
Ticks, chiggers and potholes. Though it is an election year, we can safely say that we can all unite in our distaste for all three and in that order. If you feel that chiggers are worse than ticks, then we shall just have to agree to disagree. While not much progress has been made on the tick and chigger front, we are pleased that some of the potholes in the Silerton area have been filled. Many thanks to the nameless workers who fixed them, especially during this hot and humid summer weather.
